(Pupils have to choose cards in a shape of heart or smile- heart is group “Love” and smile “Happiness”)
You have to read texts and answer the questions.
First group “Love”
British and American families
British and American families are small. In fact the populations of both Britain an
the USA have stopped growing. The typical family has a father, mother and two
children. Grandparents come to visit, but do not usually live with their children.
Most people get married between the ages of 20 and 23 but many marriages end in divorce. This means that both countries have a large number of "single parent families", one father or mother looking after their children alone.
The typical British family has a car, a colour TV set, a washing machine, and a cat or dog as well. They start the day at about 7 o'clock, have breakfast at 8. and are off to work by 8.30 . More and more women now go out to work as well as men. The children have lunch at school at about 12.30, and come home at 4 in the afternoon. Their parents are usually home by 6 o'clock, and the family eats together at 6.30 or 7. In the evenings, father may go to the pub for a drink, or stay at home and watch TV with the others. Children go to bed early, at about 8 o'clock, two or three hours before their parents.
The typical American family has more money than a British family. Many have two or three cars, large modern kitchens and more electrical goods. They eat more meat and spend more on clothes. But their daily programme is nearly the same. Like British children, American children eat lunch at school, come home mid-afternoon, and go to bed earlier than their parents.

Do grandparents live with their children?
When do they get married?
What do typical British family has?
What do typical American family has more than British?
How British and American children are alike?

Second group «Happiness»
      1. A typical Ukrainian family

A typical Ukrainian family consists of a mother, father and one or two children. A family with 3 children is considered to be large and such a family even has rights to receive some scanty privileges.

Children are expensive for Ukrainian people nowadays. As a family usually has only one child, parents give them all their love, that sometimes is too much for a child.

The amount of divorces in Ukraine is bigger than the amount of new marriages. It is often because of money and apartement problems. It is a common situation that the younger and the older generation live together in a small apartment. Sometimes there are such families where grandparents, parents and maried children live together in one not large apartment. This happens not because they love each other so much and want to live together, but because they can't afford to live separately.

Women in Ukraine retire at the age of 55. And they often dedicate the rest of their life to their grandchildren and spoil them with their enormous care.

I know that people in foreign countries used to travel and enjoy life when they are retired. But old people in Ukraine do not have such a possibility. Their pension is always not enough to buy all the food they want.
What can you say about typical Ukrainian family?
Why are there more divorces than marriages in Ukraine?
Do Ukrainian grandparents live with their children?
What do Ukrainian women after 55 years?
What can you tell about Ukrainian pensioners?
  1. Discussing the questions
1) How many family members do you have?
2) Who is the oldest in your family? How old is he(she)?
3) What is your favourite family tradition?
4) What Ukrainian holiday is important for you?
5) What foreign holiday does your family support?
6) How old were your parents when they got married?
7) How do you think what are the main aspects for building the stong family?
(I think (In my opinion) understanding, supporting(підтримка), love , respect, we have to kiss and hug each other. These aspects can help us to build strong family. )
8) What colour of wedding dress do you want wearing in your the happiest day?
9) Who has to be head of family? ( democratic family relations, to give each other - understanding)
  1. Developing listening skills.

Wedding

Wedding is a very important and special occasion. It’s a day when two people in love get married. Different countries follow different traditions during the wedding. For example, in our country couples go to a local registry office and then to church. After that, they organize a big party, to which most relatives and close friends are invited. During the ceremony at the registry office couples exchange rings and put their signatures in special documents. The guests drink champagne there and eat chocolate. The Bride traditionally wears a gorgeous white dress and a veil. A bridegroom wears a black and white suit. He also presents flowers to his future wife on this day. There are some superstitions about the wedding. For example, the bride shouldn’t arrive first to the church because it’s a bad luck. The groom shouldn’t see the bride in the morning of the wedding. It can also bring bad luck. At some point during the wedding the bride should toss her bouquet and the person who catches it first is supposed to get married next. Traditionally, all guests give presents to the newlyweds. It might be money, household appliances, clothing, make-up, sweets and else. Other countries also have some interesting traditions. Thus, during the wedding ceremony in Holland a wish tree is created and placed next to the bride and groom’s table. Guests put their wishes for the newlyweds on paper leaves of this tree. In Ireland the bride usually wears a wildflower wreath in her hair. In England the bride should arrive to the church with her father in a car. Koreans pick the wedding date according to astrological signs. To sum up, I’d like to say that wedding ceremony and traditions vary from country to country and are always interesting.
